The monsoon 2026 delayed onset is now six days past IMD’s May 26 prediction for Kerala. It’s June 1. Still no rain.
The new arrival window is June 2–4. The IMD monsoon forecast that comes with it is worse than the wait — downgraded to 90% of normal, firmly below normal.
Monsoon 2026: The Forecast Downgraded to 90%
IMD’s first 2026 monsoon forecast in April pegged the season at 92% of normal — already “below normal.” On Thursday, it cut that to 90%. That’s the weakest pre-monsoon estimate since 2018. The same release flagged a 60% probability of deficient rainfall — nearly four times the historical odds of around 15%.
El Nino is strengthening in the Pacific. The Indian Ocean Dipole, which usually pushes back, isn’t. That’s the meteorology. The economics are worse.
Kerala Onset Delayed: Why “When” Stopped Being the Story
A Bay of Bengal cyclonic circulation and a Pacific typhoon pulled apart the westerly winds Kerala needed. IMD says conditions are turning favourable again. But even if rain lands on Tuesday, the season is already forecast at its weakest in eight years.
Reservoirs are at 24.75% of capacity nationally. South India is at 17.55%. June rainfall is forecast below normal. Heatwaves are expected through July — power demand will spike just as hydro generation collapses.
Kharif sowing is starting anyway. 60% of farmers depend entirely on monsoon rain. 45% of India’s net sown area has no assured irrigation. They’re planting without knowing what falls.
The Convergence Nobody Planned For
Fertiliser production is down 25% because the Iran war is squeezing LNG through Hormuz. Petrol in Delhi crossed ₹102.12 a litre this morning — the fuel that runs the tractors has risen four times in two weeks. New state governments in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry are still forming cabinets. Most agriculture ministers haven’t been sworn in.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan says the Centre is “fully prepared” with extra seeds. The same IMD warning of 60% deficient odds is the one being told preparedness will hold.
The monsoon 2026 delayed onset hasn’t even arrived. The convergence already has.
