Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (15): Youngest India Call-Up Ever for T20I Ireland

Sachin Tendulkar debuted for India at 16 years and 205 days. That record stood for 37 years.

On Saturday, the BCCI named Vaibhav Sooryavanshi — born March 27, 2011 — in India’s T20I squad for the Ireland and England tour. By the time the first ball is bowled in Dublin on June 20, he’ll be 15 years and roughly 12 weeks old. Over a year younger than Tendulkar was on debut. The youngest India call-up in any format. Ever.

That headline ate every column. The other announcement, buried in the same press release, was almost as big.

India’s Youngest Call-Up Ever — and a New Captain

Same release: Shreyas Iyer is India’s new T20I captain. Suryakumar Yadav’s tenure ended after India’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign — nobody is clarifying whether he stepped down or was eased out. Iyer captained KKR to the IPL 2024 title and led Punjab Kings through IPL 2026. He has zero international captaincy experience. He’ll get it in Ireland.

A new captain. The youngest call-up ever. One press release. The BCCI didn’t rotate the T20I team. It rebuilt it.

The IPL Did the Selecting

Both moves are IPL 2026 audits, not selection-committee instincts. Sooryavanshi won the Orange Cap with 776 runs at a strike rate of 242.85. He swept MVP and Emerging Player. He broke Chris Gayle’s record for sixes in a single IPL season. After his 97 off 29 in the Eliminator against SRH, Michael Vaughan called him the best T20 opener in the world. Kris Srikkanth had demanded the call-up when Sooryavanshi became the youngest and fastest to 500 IPL runs. The committee needed two months to agree.

Iyer’s case is the same shape: IPL leadership pedigree, no India shirt to point to. Both names were chosen in dugouts between March and May, not at any selection trial.

Ten days ago, Sooryavanshi watched Rajasthan Royals get eliminated by Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2. Two days after that, RCB lifted the trophy and his season was over. On June 20, he’s in Ireland.
