IPL 2026 Playoffs Final Week: Three Qualified, One Spot Left

The IPL 2026 playoffs race enters its final week with three teams qualified — RCB, GT, SRH — and one spot left. When we first mapped the playoff math, the picture was far less clear. A week ago, CSK were sitting in the top four with their path looking comfortable. Sunday night at Chepauk changed everything. MS Dhoni stepped onto the field in a tracksuit, not pads, while Ishan Kishan hit seven sixes to end Chennai’s season as we knew it.

How SRH Qualified and Reshaped the Playoff Picture

Kishan’s 70 off 47 balls and Heinrich Klaasen’s 47 chased down 181 in 19 overs. SRH won by five wickets. That single result locked in three of four playoff spots — RCB (whose path included RCB’s last-ball elimination of MI), Gujarat Titans (in by virtue of SRH’s win), and SRH themselves.

Three teams down. One spot left. And then the math gets ugly.

The Race for the Final Playoff Spot

PBKS sit 4th on 13 points despite losing six straight. RR have 12 with form somehow worse — three consecutive defeats (after GT’s 77-run win over RR pushed Rajasthan out of the top four). CSK have 12 and one game left, away at already-qualified GT. DC have 12 but the worst NRR in the contention zone (-0.871). KKR have 11 with two home games against MI and DC — riding KKR’s four-match winning streak.

Two points separate fourth from eighth. One win away from being in. One loss away from being out.

CSK’s problem isn’t position — it’s leverage. A week ago, beating SRH at home meant control. Now they need to beat GT in Ahmedabad AND need RR to drop points AND PBKS to lose to LSG AND KKR to slip up. Four results, one week, zero margin.

The Game That Decides Most of It

Sunday, May 24. Two matches. MI vs RR at 3:30 PM. KKR vs DC at 7:30 PM. By that night, three of these five teams will be eliminated and one will be in.

Dhoni’s brief walk onto Chepauk on Sunday looked like a goodbye. The way CSK’s season is going, it probably was. The IPL 2026 playoffs final week has one spot left. The math says someone gets it. The form says nobody deserves it.
