Ukraine’s ambassador to Germany, Oleksiy Mekiev, said he had received a promise from Berlin to supply his country with more weapons.
He told the German weekly Welt am Sonntag that Germany had promised Ukraine more military weapons in direct talks. What kind of weapons will be given will be jointly informed in due course.
He said, he does not want to put diplomatic pressure on the German government. But we don’t have long to wait. So we call for speedy delivery of what Berlin will offer, he added.
Germany has abandoned its long-standing policy of not sending lethal weapons to conflict zones since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Last September, Ukraine asked Germany for Leopard tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
Blaming Germany for ignoring it, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Berlin had given ‘abstract threats and excuses’ not to supply such military hardware.
