NIT Jamshedpur all ready for mega quiz clash in memory of Flight Lieutenant Sunit Mohanty
Jamshedpur: NIT Jamshedpur students are all excited about the action that’s about to unfold in the finals on 7th November 2020. They are all eager to see which team will be crowned as CHAMPIONS of MONTY QUIZ 2.0.
Dreams can be as great as your flight of imagination, and reality may or may not be as great as your dream depending on your conviction to fulfil it. Flight Lieutenant Sunit Mohanty was one such person who had the imagination of dreaming big and the conviction to fulfil them.
Sunit who always idolised his father, dreamt of becoming an air force pilot. His father Group Captain S.N Mohanty flew the IL-76 transport aircraft. Sunit’s focus was so razor sharp that even while pursuing his engineering, his aim was to clear the CDS examination. And Sunit passed all levels of this examination, topping the merit list in the end. He started by flying the Hawk fighter aircraft and then shifted to transport vehicles like AN-32.
He was living his dream to the fullest, flying and traversing the limits of the sky above. But the happiness was short-lived. It was fine weather in Arunachal Pradesh’s Mechuka valley on June 3, 2019 —the day 13 air warriors of Indian Air Force (IAF) went missing during a routine maintenance and familiarisation sortie. The An-32 responsible for carrying these warriors from Jorhat to Shi-Yomi went missing thirty-three minutes after take-off.
Eight days later, the wreckage was spotted at the Pari Hills of Siang district — 12,000 feet from the last recorded aircraft position with no survivors. All thirteen Air Warriors were martyred, including Flight Lieutenant Sunit Mohanty. His majestic journey ended while he was still living his childhood dream.
But for his friends and batchmates, Sunit and his memories will never die. He was not just a brilliant pilot but also an extraordinary human being. This was the reason which motivated his friends to come together and start The Monty Quiz to keep his memories eternal.
Sunit himself was a quizzing wizard in his college days. His impeccable knowledge made him the best quizzer in the entire region. While completing his engineering from NIT- Jamshedpur, he was conferred the title of Regional Quizzing Champion. His friends at AFA used to call him, ” Lord Monty” because of his immaculate knowledge.
The first edition of Monty Quiz was organised on 7th November 2019 at his Alma-Mater NIT, Jamshedpur. The Alumni Relations and quizzing club of the college along with Sunit’s batchmates slogged day and night to organize the event. The first edition was a huge success and it saw participation from teams from across the country. The event was attended by a huge audience and was appreciated all across the subcontinent.
This year even amidst a pandemic situation, the organising team of Monty Quiz decided that they will not stop this tradition. Monty Quiz 2.0 went online and prize money of more than 50K was at stake. These teams clearly show the diversity of participation in this event. Most of these finalist teams are cross-college teams and include colleges like IIM-B, XLRI, TISS-MUMBAI, IIT-D, BITS, GMC, NMIMS, IIT-M, and NIT-JSR. These 9 brilliant quizzing teams will compete with each other in the finals that will be conducted live through Zoom.
