Jamshedpur: Former minister and Jamshedpur East MLA Saryu Roy has supported the demand for postponement of NEET and JEE examinations during lockdown period.
Reacting to a plaint from an examinee of UGC NET and CUCET from Chakradharpur, he urged the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Education Minister Dr R P Nishank to listen to the appeals of the students and examinees and resolve their issues. He observed that the entire opposition including BJP leader Dr Subramanian Swamy and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren have been raising this issue and this issue needs to be resolved.
On Twitter, a student from Chakradharpur Subham Gupta wrote: “The examinations of UGC NET and CUCET are to be held in September. I am a resident of Chakradharpur and my closest examination centre would be Jamshedpur: As the buses and trains are not running, it will be difficult to reach there and staying there as well as fooding would be difficult too. Kindly help us and be our voice!”
Responding to his plaint, Saryu Roy appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Education Minister Dr. R P Nishank that they should listen to such appeals and resolve the matter.
It may be recalled that Dr. Subramanian Swamy has been supporting the demand for postponement of all examinations keeping in mind the Covid-19 situation in the country.
Students had appealed to him to help them in the matter and ensure that the examinations are not held at during the Covid-19 situation as that would be hazardous for their safety and would also be inconvenient for many of them.
However, the Supreme Court in its August 17 order refused to pass orders for postponing the NEET and JEE.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court verdict on the pleas challenging UGC’s circular to hold final university examinations will be pronounced today.
Last week, four states and Union territories – Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal and Odisha – had urged the SC to ask the UGC to not conduct final year exams for laksh of university students amid the pandemic situation.
However, on the issue of postponement of NEET and JEE, the SC in its order on August 17 last had remarked that the careers of students cannot be put under jeopardy.
The SC had observed: “Life cannot be stopped, we have to move ahead with all safeguards and all. Are students ready to waste one whole year? Education should be opened up. Covid may continue for a year or more. Are you going to wait another year?”
In his latest remark, Dr. Swamy has tweeted: “In the NEET and JEE exam matter today, are students like Draupadi being disrobed? CMs can play the role of Krishna. All my experience as a student and then Professor for 60 years tells me something wrong has been scheduled. I feel like Vidura.”
